Skull Appreciation Society

Skull Appreciation Society

We created Skull Appreciation Society so that we could find, document and share the very best skulls with you from all corners of the globe. From skull art to skull sculptures and from skull jewellery to skull toys we will not stop searching until we have all the skulls in the world, in one place, for your reference and enjoyment.

Our passion for skulls was born through the work we create through Mr Four Fingers, where we use skulls in our art, illustration and t-shirt design. We would often search the internet looking for inspiration and artistic reference and were disappointed with the results. So we created a website dedicated to skulls in all their shapes and forms, where other skull lovers could come and join us in appreciation of this iconic symbol.

Skulls have always represented death but to us skulls are a celebration of life, a symbol of what was and what will be through the lives of us and everyone that follows. Artists have been using skulls in their creations for hundreds of years and will continue to do so and we are going to be talking about and sharing them to you in all their glory and beauty.

Tim Burton’s Hansel and Gretel

AT LAST!! For you obscure media fans, here is one of legendary filmmaker Tim Burton's early efforts in collaboration with The Disney Channel that aired only once on Halloween night in 1983.

This is Burton's unique, twisted, Burtonesque version of the classic Grimm Fairy Tale featuring an all Asian cast. Hansel and Gretel are the two children of a poor toymaker, whose evil stepmother wishes to do away with them to avoid starving. After being intentionally led away in the woods, they come across a gingerbread house attended to by a bizarre, but seemingly nice old hag with a candy cane nose! (played by the same male actor as the Stepmother) who turns out to have evil designs for our heroes!

After the initial airing, Disney Channel execs were so distraught by the frightening subject matter, that they never allowed the film to be shown again. Thankfully, someone managed to tape it that night, which provides us with this footage.

  • Hansel - Andy Lee
  • Gretel - Alison Hong
  • Stepmother / Wicked Witch - Michael Yama
  • Father - Jim Ishida
  • Dan Dan the Gingerbread Man (voice) - David Koenigsburg

Features early work by Stephen Chiodo of the Chiodo Bros. Studio as well as the late Joe Ranft of Disney and Pixar.

Elizabeth McGrath

Elizabeth McGrath

Los Angeles-born artist Elizabeth McGrath has always had an eye for the strange beauty in the grotesqueries of life; this appreciation is nowhere more evident than in her work. Inspired by the relationship between the natural world and the detritus of consumer culture, she brings forth a new cavalcade of creatures from the darker corners of the streets, the city, the imagination. It is this melancholy interaction between man-made status symbols and suffering specimens of nature that make up her intricate body of work
