The Haunted Castle 1896

The Haunted Castle 1896

Le Manoir du Diable, released in the United States as The Haunted Castle and in Britain as The Devil's Castle, is an 1896 French short silent film directed by Georges Méliès. The film, a brief pantomimed sketch in the style of a theatrical comic fantasy, tells the story of an encounter with the Devil and various attendant phantoms. It is intended to evoke amusement and wonder from its audiences, rather than fear; however, because of its themes, it can technically be considered the first horror film, and (because it includes a transformation involving a bat) even the first vampire film.

Each of my pieces is hand carved and may include a variety of woods. I mainly use linden, but also work with cedar, pine and aspen. The pieces are then hand painted in rich, layered color and antiqued to give them an aged feel. Some pieces may include wire, tin, glass beads, found objects, hardware or clear resin.

Inspiration for my pieces comes from many places. Vintage folk art, antique toys and old circus and vaudeville posters to name a few. Some of my carvings will be completed in a couple of days. Others will sit around my studio for weeks, and even months, waiting to be finished. Those are usually my favorite pieces, maybe because I have lived with them for awhile. Each one is hand made from start to finish for a unique, one of a kind artful object.

Rod Serling’s Night Gallery

Rod Serling's Night Gallery

For those old enough to remember, Night Gallery was creator-host Rod Serling’s follow-up to The Twilight Zone. Set in a shadowy museum of the outré, Serling unveiled a dark and disturbing collection of canvases as preface to a highly diverse anthology of tales in the fantasy, horror, and science fiction vein.

Bolstering Serling’s thoughtful original dramas were adaptations of classic genre material—short stories by such dark-fantasy luminaries as H. P. Lovecraft, Fritz Leiber, A. E. van Vogt, Algernon Blackwood, Conrad Aiken, Richard Matheson, August Derleth, and Christianna Brand. Variety of material brought with it a variety of tone, from the deadly serious to the tongue-in-cheek, stretching the television anthology concept to its very limits. But conflicts over the series’ direction arose between Serling and producer Jack Laird. The disgruntled host found himself excluded from the producer’s circle. Despite the tensions, Serling continued his dramatic contributions and ultimately scripted more than a third of the segments.
