Australian artist Julia Deville is inspired by the Memento Mori jewellery of the 15th to 18th centuries and Victorian mourning jewellery, and is fascinated by their acceptance of death. Julia works predominantly in silver and gold, and incorporates materials that were once living, such as jet, human hair and taxidermy. She uses these materials and symbols of death in her work as a Memento Mori, a reminder of our mortality. Julia considers her work to be a celebration of life, a preservation of something beautiful, and in accordance with her ethical beliefs only uses animals that have died of natural causes.
